Archaeological Site of Eleusis
Eleusis rewards a dedicated west-Attica stop for the setting of the ancient Mysteries and their processional route. Its meaning becomes clearer when you connect the ruins with the initiation tradition.
At Eleusis, the remains of the sanctuary relate to the ancient mysteries held here rather than to a conventional temple visit. Walk the ceremonial approach and examine the surviving foundations with that ritual use in mind. The site is outside central Athens and benefits from a planned return route.
What to look for
Locate the Telesterion remains within the sanctuary enclosure.
