Why go
The temple's surviving columns are striking because they occupy the tip of the peninsula, with sea on three sides. Ancient Athenians used Sounion as a sacred place and later fortified the cape to guard a vital sea route. Looking from the headland toward the water explains both roles better than viewing the ruins in isolation.
What to look for
- Temple of Poseidon columns stand on the open headland.
- The Aegean surrounds the cape on three sides.
- The temple and its setting connect worship with Athens' maritime history.
Useful to know
- Allow a separate excursion from Athens rather than fitting the cape into a central-city walk.
- Check current admission and visiting hours for the temple enclosure before travel.
- Expect an exposed headland when choosing clothing and timing.
