Koules Fortress
Koules places Heraklion’s Venetian sea defenses directly at the harbour entrance for a compact fort visit. Its waterside position explains how the fort controlled the port entrance.
Koules guards the entrance to Heraklion’s old harbour, and a walk through its walls shows the scale of Venetian coastal defence. Look back toward the port from the fortifications to connect the building with the city it protected. This is a compact stop near central Heraklion rather than a full-day excursion.
What to look for
Inspect the stone chambers before looking back toward the quays.
Useful to know
Access is from the harbour mole; check the fortress opening before walking out from town, especially in poor coastal weather.
