Rotunda of Thessaloniki

The Rotunda is an indoor architectural visit; its domed volume and surviving mosaics explain its successive uses. Its interior suits a rain-day stop, although the street approach remains exposed.

Why go

The Rotunda’s enormous interior makes Roman scale immediately legible, while later Christian and Ottoman uses explain why the building looks unlike a simple ruin. Walk around the interior before studying the surviving decoration. It pairs well with the nearby Galerius monuments on foot, subject to their separate access.

What to look for

  • Study the upper-wall mosaics beneath the immense dome.

Useful to know

  • Verify current interior hours; religious or cultural events may affect entry, and the monument is reached on foot from the city centre.
