Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge is a long, strenuous descent from the White Mountains toward the Libyan Sea. Its narrowing rock walls reward hikers who can plan the full route and exit.

Why go

The route begins high near Omalos, drops through the national park and continues to Agia Roumeli on the coast. At the Gates, rock walls draw dramatically close together. The changing terrain and eventual sea arrival are the experience; this is not a short stroll to a lookout, and weather can determine whether entry is possible.

What to look for

  • The Gates are the gorge's narrowest, most dramatic section.
  • White Mountains terrain gives way to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli.
  • The park protects habitat for the Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri.

Useful to know

  • Plan for a demanding full descent of about 16 km including the stretch beyond the park exit to Agia Roumeli.
  • Arrange your onward journey from Agia Roumeli before committing to the walk.
  • Check the park's live entry notice and weather on the day; closures can change at short notice.
