Spinalonga Fortress and Settlement
A boat trip leads to Spinalonga’s Venetian defenses and later settlement streets, where the island’s military and leprosy-colony histories meet. The enclosed paths reward a measured circuit rather than a brief landing.
Why go
The island combines Venetian fortifications with the later settlement created for people with Hansen’s disease. Follow the streets and walls with both histories in mind rather than treating it as only a fortress. A boat is essential, and the crossing, wait and return add time beyond the on-island walk.
What to look for
Follow the island circuit through fortress walls and former colony buildings.
Useful to know
Take a boat from Plaka, Elounda or Agios Nikolaos. Allow time for the crossing and check the managing Ephorate’s access notice.
