Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki brings Roman, Byzantine and later histories into one city. Its waterfront and White Tower make an easy starting point; Ano Poli and the monuments deserve more time.
The city was an important Roman and Byzantine centre, and its surviving churches and other monuments make that past visible on ordinary streets. The White Tower marks the waterfront, while the upper town, Ano Poli, changes the view and pace. Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish layers add to a story that cannot be reduced to one period.
What to look for
The White Tower stands beside the waterfront promenade.
Byzantine monuments are distributed through the city.
Ano Poli gives a higher vantage over Thessaloniki.
Useful to know
Walk the waterfront and central monuments together, then leave separate time to climb toward Ano Poli.
Use the city's spread of monuments to follow one historical theme at a time.
