Why go
In Corfu Town, compare the Liston arcade, Spianada and fortresses with the British-era Palace of St Michael and St George. Farther out, Mon Repos relates to the ancient city, while the Achilleion near Gastouri tells a nineteenth-century royal story. The shifts in scale and purpose are easy to see.
The full story
Ancient Corcyra occupied ground south of today’s Corfu Town, with traces around the Palaiopolis and Mon Repos area. The capital that visitors know developed later behind Venetian defenses. Its Old and New Fortresses are military architecture on a city scale, while the Liston arcade gives the Spianada a more civic face. British rule added the Palace of St Michael and St George, a different kind of monument facing the open square. Mon Repos links a later residence to the site of the ancient city. Outside town, the Achilleion was commissioned by Empress Elisabeth of Austria near Gastouri. Its Achilles theme appears in statues and paintings, giving the palace a clear mythological program. These places belong to different periods and are spread across more than one area. Seeing a few in sequence is more revealing than collecting building names: ancient remains, fortified town, colonial civic space and royal retreat each answer a different question about the island.
