Corfu Island
Corfu is an Ionian island off Greece’s northwest coast, with a fortified old town and varied coast around a mountainous north. Its Venetian and British layers are especially visible in the capital.
Why go
Corfu Town offers a concentrated walk from the Old Fortress across Spianada into narrow old-town lanes. Away from the capital, the Pantokrator range and coastal villages give the island a different pace, so city history and landscape work well as distinct outings.
What to look for
The Old Fortress and New Fortress frame Corfu Town’s defensive history.
Spianada opens beside the dense old-town lanes.
Mount Pantokrator rises over the northern part of the island.
Useful to know
Give Corfu Town a walking visit before planning longer coastal trips.
Choose a coastal area deliberately; the island’s north, center and south differ in terrain.
