Cycladic History and Archaeology

Early Cycladic culture is known for flat marble figures, seafaring and small island settlements. Delos later became a major sacred island, giving the group its enduring name.

Why go

The marble figures are more than a familiar art motif: they came from an island culture linked by boats, farming and exchange long before the classical monuments of Greece. Archaeological sites and museums can put them beside other finds, while Delos shows a later chapter of the islands' religious history.

The full story

Communities in the Cyclades farmed, fished and traveled by sea in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. Archaeological work at Saliagos and Kephala on Kea has revealed early settlement and copper working. Small islands could sustain modest populations, so the sea linked communities rather than simply separating them. The best-known remains are the spare, flat figures carved from island marble in the Early Bronze Age. Many were taken from graves without records of their exact setting. That loss makes their original meaning difficult to recover, even when their shapes seem familiar to a modern viewer. Other finds, including model boats and decorated vessels sometimes called frying pans, point to a wider material culture. As the influence of Minoan Crete grew, the islands' roles changed. Delos retained its status as a sanctuary into later antiquity. Seeing the marble figures in a museum and the ruins on Delos as parts of different periods helps keep this long history from collapsing into one vague idea of ancient Greece.
