Why go

Akrotiri is worth seeing for the town plan as well as the famous frescoes. Multi-level houses, storage vessels and drainage show an organized settlement rather than an isolated palace. Pair the site with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera to connect the surviving buildings with finds removed for preservation.

The full story

Excavations at Akrotiri began in 1967 and exposed part of a large Bronze Age town beneath volcanic deposits. Streets and squares run between substantial houses, some with upper floors. Storage jars, mills and evidence of weaving suggest a settlement with everyday work as well as fine decoration. Wall paintings survived because ash covered the town. They include fishermen, antelopes and boats, subjects that make the vanished community easier to picture. The paintings and objects now seen in a museum should be understood alongside the preserved buildings at the site. They are fragments of a town, not a complete portrait of it. The eruption changed the island's shape and preserved this evidence at the same time. Its precise date has been debated through archaeological and scientific methods, so a single exact year is less useful to a visitor than the sequence: a thriving settlement, a major eruption and later rediscovery. On Santorini, that sequence links the caldera landscape to the rooms and streets at Akrotiri.
