The History behind Paros

Paros was an active Cycladic island in antiquity, shaped by marble, maritime links and rivalry with Athens. Its history adds context to the ancient remains and reused stone visible around Parikia.

Why go

The island's old capital occupied the site of present day Parikia. Its ancient role becomes tangible in the medieval castle built with earlier marble and in the archaeological finds displayed in town. The story also explains why Paros was entangled in the Persian Wars and Athenian alliances.

The full story

Paros grew into a prosperous island in the ancient Aegean, with links to other settlements and a reputation for fine marble. During the Persian Wars it sided with Persia, prompting an unsuccessful Athenian siege in 490 BC. It later belonged to the Athenian led Delian League and paid a substantial tribute. These episodes show that the island was a political actor, not simply a source of stone. Successive Roman and Byzantine periods added further layers. In Parikia, the medieval castle incorporates marble from an older temple, while the archaeological museum holds finds from across the island, including part of the Parian Chronicle. The reuse of stone and the survival of inscriptions give a visible thread through otherwise distant periods. Look for those fragments while walking the old town; they link the harbour settlement to the ancient capital beneath it.
