Why go
The town rewards a slower look than a beach stop alone. Start by the old harbour, where Kales fortress recalls Ierapetra's Venetian era, then turn into the narrow streets of Kato Mera to see how the old town differs from the newer waterfront. Its southern setting also makes a useful contrast with Crete's north coast towns.
What to look for
- Kales fortress stands beside the old harbour.
- Kato Mera retains narrow lanes and small houses.
- The old quarter includes buildings from the Venetian and Ottoman periods.
Useful to know
- Walk the harbour first, then explore Kato Mera on foot; the old quarter is better understood at street level.
- Treat any visit inside Kales or another building as a separate stop and check its own access details.
