Portara of Naxos
The Portara is the monumental marble doorway of an unfinished temple beside Naxos harbour. It makes a short, exposed stop with a clear link to the island’s ancient ambitions.
Why go
The gateway is the surviving face of a temple of Apollo that was never completed. Standing on the small islet, its great stone frame is easy to read against the sea and Naxos Town. You can appreciate the scale without a long archaeological visit.
What to look for
Huge marble doorway of the unfinished temple
Small islet beside Naxos harbour
View through the frame toward town and sea
Useful to know
Walk over from Naxos Town when conditions suit the exposed islet.
Allow extra time if you want to examine the temple foundations.
