Why go
The gorge offers a long passage through steep mountain walls rather than a short viewpoint stop. Its narrow Gates are the best-known feature, but the experience is the sustained walk from a chosen entrance across rocky ground. Plan the exit as carefully as the start: Agia Roumeli lies at the far end, and the mapped gorge point is not an entrance.
What to look for
- Rocky trail sections run through the White Mountains gorge.
- At the Gates, the gorge walls draw close together.
- The route reaches Agia Roumeli on Crete's south coast.
Useful to know
- Choose Xyloskalo or Agia Roumeli as your actual entrance; the map point represents the gorge, not a trailhead.
- Allow for a roughly 16 km rocky walk if traversing the full route and arrange your onward journey from the exit.
- Check NECCA's latest access notice before departure; weather can close both entrances.
