Getting Around Hakone
Hakone's mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, lake boats and buses serve different parts of the region. Match them to your stops and leave room for changes in mountain services.
A common progression starts at Hakone-Yumoto, climbs by rail to Gora, continues by cable car to Sounzan, then crosses Owakudani by ropeway toward Togendai. Boats serve Lake Ashi ports, and buses connect the lakeshore with other districts and the rail gateway. This pattern helps make sense of the map, but you can use only the legs that serve your chosen sights.
Useful to know
Check current ropeway, boat and bus status before committing to a full circuit.
Keep transfer time in the day plan, especially between mountain and lakeside stops.
Compare the Hakone Freepass with your actual route and check which services it covers.
