From the Hakone World / Travel essentials
Hakone's Transport Network
Rail, cable car, ropeway, boats and buses connect Hakone's separated districts. The familiar mountain circuit is useful for orientation, but its links and operating conditions need checking before travel.
Why go
A route through Hakone can be part of the experience: the mountain railway reaches Gora from Hakone-Yumoto, the cable car climbs to Sounzan, and the ropeway crosses Owakudani toward Togendai on Lake Ashi. Sightseeing boats connect lakeside ports, while buses link places beyond the rail corridor. Understanding the sequence helps you avoid crossing the same mountain twice.
Useful to know
Choose stops along one connected corridor, such as Gora to Owakudani to Lake Ashi.
Check current services before relying on the ropeway or a boat connection.
Compare pass coverage with your chosen route rather than assuming every operator is included.
