Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park
This national park links Hakone's volcanic hills and Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji, the Izu Peninsula and islands. Pick a specific Hakone site or trail; the park is far too spread out for one stop.
In Hakone, the park's appeal lies in seeing a volcanic landscape from several angles: the lake beneath the caldera rim, steaming ground at Ōwakudani, and sections of the old Tokaido road. The wider park reaches well beyond Hakone, so its name is most useful for choosing a landscape, not planning a single arrival point.
What to look for
Lake Ashi sits amid the Hakone volcanic landscape.
The old Tokaido route passes through the park's Hakone area.
Ōwakudani exposes an active volcanic valley.
Useful to know
Choose a named Hakone trailhead or attraction before setting out; the park has no single entrance.
Check conditions for the specific trail or volcanic site you plan to visit.
