Hakone Checkpoint

A reconstructed Edo-period checkpoint beside Lake Ashi, with guard buildings and exhibits that make the old Tōkaidō road tangible. The exhibition hall is a separate indoor component.

Hakone Checkpoint

Why go

Choose the checkpoint to understand how travel was controlled on the historic road. The reconstructed guardhouses and exhibition hall give more context than a quick lakeside photo stop, and the site pairs naturally with the nearby cedar avenue. The lakeside location makes the history visible in the surrounding route.

What to look for

  • Reconstructed guardhouses and gates
  • Historic documents and checkpoint objects in the exhibition hall

Useful to know

  • Allow time for both the outdoor checkpoint and its exhibition hall.
