Lake Ashi

Lake Ashi is Hakone's caldera lake, linking shore walks, the shrine area and boat travel. Mount Fuji may appear beyond the water in clear weather, but the lake rewards a visit without that view.

Lake Ashi

Why go

The lake gathers several sides of Hakone in one landscape: a volcanic basin, the Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine, and the old Tokaido route near its shore. A boat offers a different angle from a walk, while the south shore is a useful place to look for Mount Fuji when visibility allows.

What to look for

  • The Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine stands at the water's edge.
  • The surrounding ridges reveal the lake's caldera setting.
  • Mount Fuji can appear beyond the south shore in clear weather.

Useful to know

  • Choose a shore area or boat route in advance; the lake is too large to treat as one arrival point.
  • Keep the Mount Fuji view as a weather-dependent bonus rather than the sole reason for coming.
  • Cruises are separate ticketed services; check their current route and timetable.
