Ōwakudani
Ōwakudani is Hakone's steaming volcanic valley, with lookout views and black eggs cooked using geothermal heat. Conditions can change quickly, so confirm access before heading up.
Here the volcanic forces behind Hakone are visible rather than just part of the scenery. Steam vents rise from the valley below the public viewpoints, and clear skies may reveal Mount Fuji. The black eggs are a distinctive local ritual, but the active landscape is the main reason to make the trip.
What to look for
Steam rises from active vents in the valley.
The lookout frames Hakone's mountains and, in clear weather, Mount Fuji.
Black eggs sold at Ōwakudani are cooked using geothermal heat.
Useful to know
Check same-day park and ropeway status; volcanic gas and weather can interrupt access.
Use the main viewpoints for an independent visit. The Nature Trail requires advance booking and a guide.
The guided Nature Trail is explained in Japanese and has health and mobility restrictions.
