Getting Around Halifax
Plan Halifax travel around the peninsula and the wider municipality separately. Downtown stops, harbour crossings and trips farther afield call for different combinations of walking, public transit and driving.
Halifax Transit operates buses and ferries, making the harbour part of the transport network as well as the view. For a visit focused on downtown, compare distances between your actual stops before hiring a car. Driving becomes a different proposition when your plans extend beyond the central area into the surrounding region.
Useful to know
Use Halifax Transit’s journey planner for both outward and return trips, especially when combining buses with a ferry.
Check current fare and transfer rules before a bus-and-ferry journey; do not assume every service uses the same ticket.
Arrange a taxi pickup when you need one at a specific place; street hailing can be difficult in parts of Halifax.
