Sport Around Halifax’s Lakes and Campuses

Lake Banook’s paddling history and Halifax’s university sports traditions offer two ways into local sporting life. Separate watching a competition from arranging participation at a club or facility.

Why go

Dartmouth’s sheltered lakes help explain why canoeing and kayaking have such a strong local presence. Lake Banook hosted world championship racing in 1997 and 2009. University sport adds a different setting through Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s. These are useful starting points for a sports interest, but neither club access nor a match is guaranteed by arriving.

Useful to know

  • For paddling participation, contact the relevant club rather than assuming its facilities are open to visitors.
  • Check university fixtures before planning to watch a game.
