Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia
Head to Cherry Brook for African Nova Scotian history told through communities, faith and individual lives. The Black Cultural Centre adds depth beyond Halifax’s waterfront and military landmarks.
Opened in 1983, the centre preserves and interprets more than four centuries of African Nova Scotian history. Its displays bring slavery, Black Loyalist experiences and the Underground Railroad into the same account as churches and community life. Personal profiles help connect those larger histories to named people.
What to look for
Banner Hall introduces Black Loyalists, slavery and the Underground Railroad.
Upstairs banners profile sixteen African Nova Scotians.
Downstairs galleries explore community and spiritual life.
Useful to know
Plan Cherry Brook as a separate excursion from downtown Halifax.
