Imperial Citadel of Thang Long
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long brings Hanoi's earlier capital into view through gates, historic buildings and excavated layers. Allow time to move through the grounds.
This is the clearest place in the city to see how successive dynasties built on the same political center. Archaeological areas and surviving structures explain a layered site more effectively together than a single monument photograph. A visit also gives context to the nearby Flag Tower, which belongs to a later chapter of the precinct.
What to look for
Doan Mon gate, the Kinh Thien dragon steps and archaeological layers chart successive royal capitals.
The D67 site adds a twentieth-century chapter within the same precinct.
Useful to know
Allow a substantial walking visit; the grounds extend beyond a single gate.
