Old Havana Plazas and Harbor Defenses

Trace Havana from its colonial plazas to the forts guarding the bay, with Havana Cathedral, Plaza Vieja and Morro providing the clearest anchors.

Old Havana Plazas and Harbor Defenses

Why go

Start in Plaza de la Catedral, continue through Plaza Vieja and Plaza de Armas, and use the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales to frame the colonial city. The harbor then explains the larger story: La Punta, Morro and La Cabaña show how the channel was defended. The complete list is ambitious, so keep Havana Cathedral and the central plazas essential; cross the bay only if time, heat and transport remain manageable.

Useful to know

  • Keep the Old Havana plazas as the core; treat the east-side forts as an optional second half.
  • Check current access before relying on any fortress interior.
