Suomenlinna

Suomenlinna is an inhabited sea fortress spread across six Helsinki islands, begun by Sweden in 1748 and now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and city district.

Suomenlinna

Why go

A ferry journey leads into a landscape where ramparts, residential lanes and working institutions occupy the same islands. The official Blue Route gives the clearest historical cross-section, linking Suomenlinna Church, the Great Courtyard, dry dock, Kustaanmiekka’s fortifications and the King’s Gate.

What to look for

  • Kustaanmiekka’s sea-facing earthworks, sandbanks and cannons reveal the fortress’s defensive scale.
  • The Great Courtyard and dry dock show how military planning shaped everyday spaces.
  • Suomenlinna remains a living district, not a fortress preserved as an empty enclosure.

Useful to know

  • The district is accessible year-round, but museums, cafés and other services keep their own schedules.
  • Follow the marked Blue Route for the principal sights and allow for uneven ground between them.
  • Pikku Mustasaari includes a mostly closed military area; respect access restrictions.
