Why go
This car-based day begins with the preserved prison buildings at Abashiri Prison Museum, then moves a few minutes to the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum on Mount Tento. The second stop explains the frozen sea before the drive west to Lake Saroma Observation Deck, where the lake, sandbar and sea spread out below you. Budget about five minutes between the museums and at least ninety minutes for the final drive and hill approach. The observation deck normally closes from late November to late April, depending on snow, so use this route only when Saroma Town confirms the road and deck are open.
