From the Hokkaido World / Areas
Hokkaido Island
Hokkaido rewards trips built around a few regions: Sapporo and nearby Otaru for city time, the central mountains for volcanic scenery, or the eastern coast for wetlands and wildlife.
Japan's northern island offers sharply different landscapes within one destination. Pair Sapporo's civic and food culture with Otaru's port, explore lakes and active volcanic terrain around Shikotsu and Tōya, or travel east toward Kushiro's marsh and Shiretoko's coast. Distances make a focused regional plan more satisfying than a circuit of every headline stop.
What to look for
Sapporo's Odori Park becomes a sculpture setting during the winter Snow Festival.
The central uplands hold volcanic lakes and mountain trails.
Eastern Hokkaido meets the Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Useful to know
Plan around one or two regions; crossing the island can consume much of a day.
Check seasonal access and weather before committing to mountain or coastal outings.
