From the Hokkaido World / Places
Biei
Biei’s appeal is its patchwork of cultivated hills, mountain backdrops and Shirogane Blue Pond. The fields are working farmland, so the views belong on public roads and designated stops.
The changing colours and contours of Biei’s fields are the main reason to roam its hill country. Look beyond the foreground toward the Tokachidake and Daisetsuzan ranges, then make a separate stop at the Blue Pond for a very different water-and-forest scene.
What to look for
Cultivated fields create the patchwork hill views.
Tokachidake and Daisetsuzan mountains frame the town.
Shirogane Blue Pond adds a distinct waterside sight.
Useful to know
Keep to public roads and designated viewing places; the photogenic fields are private farmland.
Plan the hill views and Blue Pond as separate stops across the town.
