Lake Kussharo

Lake Kussharo is a vast caldera lake with geothermal shorelines. This pin marks the Sunayu shore access, where warm sand and a broad water view make a focused stop possible; other shores and Wakoto Peninsula require separate travel.

Lake Kussharo

Why go

Sunayu puts the lake’s geothermal character at the water’s edge: visitors can stop by the warm sand and look across the broad caldera. The lake is too large to treat as one walking attraction. This anchor makes a realistic short visit, while Wakoto Peninsula or a pass viewpoint would be a separate excursion.

What to look for

  • Sunayu’s warm-sand lakeshore.
  • Wide caldera-lake view from the eastern shore.
