Noboribetsu
Noboribetsu city is best known to visitors for its inland onsen district, where Jigokudani’s steam vents and Oyunuma paths reveal the volcanic source of the baths.
Start with Jigokudani to see fumaroles in the crater landscape, then follow a suitable path toward Oyunuma before deciding whether to bathe at an onsen. The visible steam makes the link between the scenery and Noboribetsu’s varied hot-spring waters unusually clear.
What to look for
Jigokudani is a volcanic crater with active steam vents.
Oyunuma and nearby paths extend the volcanic walk.
Noboribetsu Onsen is known for several types of spring water.
Useful to know
Head specifically to the onsen district for Jigokudani; it is not the whole city centre.
Check current path conditions and each bath’s access details before setting out.
