Shikotsu-Tōya National Park
Shikotsu-Tōya pairs two caldera lakes with active volcanic landscapes in western Hokkaido. Lake Shikotsu and Lake Tōya are separate bases, so choose which volcanic story to follow.
At Lake Shikotsu, the lake and nearby Tarumae and Eniwa mountains shape the view. Around Lake Tōya, Mt. Usu and Shōwa-shinzan make volcanic activity more explicit. The wider park also includes Mt. Yōtei and Noboribetsu, but those areas deserve separate outings.
What to look for
Lake Shikotsu and Lake Tōya anchor different parts of the park.
Mt. Usu and Shōwa-shinzan reveal the region’s volcanic activity.
Mt. Yōtei is a prominent mountain in the wider park.
Useful to know
Base a shorter visit around one lake rather than linking every park district.
Check current volcanic-area and trail guidance before choosing a mountain route.
