Why go
Rail is useful for linking Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories across a day with several destinations. A current network map lets you compare connections before leaving. Pay attention to the street exit as well as the station name, particularly when travelling with luggage or using lifts.
The full story
The Island Line follows the northern side of Hong Kong Island, while the Tsuen Wan Line links Central with Kowloon and continues towards the New Territories. These geographical relationships help you read a current map, even when your day includes several transfers. For Lantau destinations, examine the Tung Chung connections and the onward journey needed beyond the station. A station is not a single street address. Platforms, gates, lifts and exits can be spread across a large area. Check the station plan when step-free movement matters, and allow for walking within the interchange rather than counting train time alone. East Rail journeys towards Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau also need a different kind of preparation from local sightseeing trips. Confirm the service and control-point arrangements, and consult the relevant official immigration authority before planning a crossing. Bilingual station signs help with navigation, but they do not replace checking the direction and destination of the train.
