Taiwan rewards a separate historical focus rather than a continuation of a Pearl River Delta route. Indigenous communities predated seventeenth-century Dutch and Spanish colonies and later Han Chinese migration. Qing rule, Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945, and the arrival of the Republic of China government in 1949 shaped another sequence of change.
