Why go
A bus journey can show you the streets between destinations, especially from an upper deck, while reaching places that need an onward connection from the MTR. Route numbers alone are insufficient: distinguish the operator, direction and vehicle type before choosing your stop or asking for directions.
The full story
Large buses and public light buses offer different experiences. Double-deckers provide elevated street views and serve many parts of Hong Kong. Minibuses are smaller vehicles identified by red or green markings, and the way you request a stop or pay can differ between services. This distinction matters when planning a route. A bus and a minibus may share a number in the same area while taking different journeys. Identify the vehicle type and destination, then confirm the boarding point and direction with the operator’s current information. For a minibus, establish how to signal your intended stop before boarding if you are unsure. Check payment methods too, particularly when relying on Octopus. On a larger bus, keep track of your destination and use the stop-request button in time to alight. For south-island or Lantau journeys, consider the return connection as part of the outing rather than planning only the outward ride.
