Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Climb a statue-lined hillside approach in Sha Tin to reach temple halls, pavilions and a pagoda. The uphill journey forms a substantial part of the visit, so allow time for both ascent and observation.

Why go

The golden figures beside the approach appear in varied poses, making the climb more than a means of reaching the halls. At the top, the pagoda and Arhats Corridor extend the sequence of Buddhist imagery. Despite its name, the complex is maintained by laypeople rather than a resident community of monks. The name also understates its scale: the complex contains nearly 13,000 Buddha statues.

What to look for

  • Golden figures in varied poses along the hillside approach
  • Temple halls and pavilions
  • Pagoda and Arhats Corridor

Useful to know

  • Allow roughly 90 minutes, including the hillside approach and a selective circuit.
  • Check current access before travelling, particularly in heavy rain; the visit involves an uphill approach.
