Why go
Höhematte gives a clear mountain view from the town center, while nearby Unterseen offers older streets across the Aare. Lake Thun and Lake Brienz reward different boat outings; Harder Kulm and Schynige Platte bring higher viewpoints. Pick one substantial excursion at a time, then use the town walk as a flexible addition.
What to look for
- Höhematte opens a view toward the Jungfrau from the middle of town.
- Unterseen's older streets sit across the Aare near Interlaken West.
- Lake Thun lies west of town; Lake Brienz and its turquoise water lie east.
The full story
The Höheweg links Interlaken West and Ost beside the Höhematte, where the Jungfrau rises beyond town. The Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel recalls the resort era; across the Aare, Unterseen keeps a smaller old-town feel. These are town stops; the high Alps demand a separate journey. Harder Kulm rises north of Interlaken and Schynige Platte lies south near Wilderswil; mountain transport reaches both viewpoints. Farther into the Jungfrau region, railways run toward the Jungfraujoch between the Jungfrau and Mönch. Seeing the peaks from town is different from traveling among them. The lakes offer another choice: Lake Thun's boats head west past Spiez and Oberhofen toward Thun. Lake Brienz lies east, with the Brienz-Rothorn railway starting in Brienz. Check weather and timetables before committing to either excursion.
Useful to know
- Walk the Höheweg between Interlaken West and Ost for a town-level introduction.
- Choose a lake or mountain outing after checking its current timetable and the day's weather.
- For a longer lake outing, compare the Thun shore stops with a Brienz trip before choosing a boat.
