Why go
The course links the low ground of Interlaken with villages and steep Alpine terrain, making the elevation change central to the race's character. Its route has passed Bönigen on Lake Brienz and climbed through Lauterbrunnen and Wengen towards the Eiger area. For a future edition, use the organizer's current program to choose a real viewing location.
The full story
The first Jungfrau Marathon took place in 1993. The race uses the marathon distance, but its setting makes it unlike a level city course. After leaving Interlaken, the historic route has run by the Lake Brienz shore near Bönigen and through Wilderswil towards Lauterbrunnen. It then climbs by Wengen and the Wengernalp into the mountains. Those place names show the scale of the effort more clearly than a generic mountain-race label: the course moves from the Bödeli to villages high above the valley. The event is occasional, and its operational route and spectator arrangements belong to each edition. Outside race time, the towns, lakeshore and mountain viewpoints can be visited as places in their own right; the marathon route is context linking them, not a standing attraction.
