Why go
The lake gives a different outing from the steeper shores of Lake Brienz. At Neuhaus you can reach the water from the Interlaken side without taking a cruise. For a fuller trip, follow the lake towards Spiez, where the castle and vineyards rise above the bay, or view the settlements from a boat towards Thun.
What to look for
- Neuhaus has a shore area open separately from its paid lido.
- Spiez bay sits below a castle and vineyards.
- A lake boat reveals the shoreline between Interlaken West, Spiez and Thun.
The full story
Lake Thun occupies the western side of the Bödeli, with Lake Brienz on the other side of Interlaken. The two lakes were once joined and later separated as the landscape changed after the last glacial period. Passenger boats have served Lake Thun since the nineteenth century, connecting lakeside places with Interlaken and Thun. That history still makes the shore and boat two distinct ways to read the lake. A stop at Neuhaus shows the water from the near shore, while Spiez brings the built landscape into the picture: its bay, castle and vineyards sit together above the lake. From a boat, the mountain backdrop and settlements unfold in sequence. Decide whether you want a simple waterside pause or the longer progression towards Spiez and Thun.
Useful to know
- Use Neuhaus near Unterseen for a short shore visit; follow local signs to distinguish the free zone from the lido.
- Give Spiez its own time if you want to see the bay, castle and vineyards rather than only pass by boat.
- Check the operator timetable before pairing a cruise with a shore stop.
