From the Israel World / Areas

Acre

Acre is a compact fortified port where Ottoman streets and markets sit above extensive Crusader halls, tunnels and earlier remains.

Acre

Why go

Give the old city most of a day rather than treating Acre as one monument. Start below ground in the Crusader complex, return to the Ottoman street level, then work toward the walls and harbor. The vertical layering is the point: the Templars' Tunnel and vaulted halls explain structures that are invisible from the lively lanes above.

What to look for

  • Crusader halls survive beneath the later Ottoman city.
  • Sea walls and the working harbor define the peninsula's edge.
  • Khans, mosques and market lanes preserve the Ottoman urban layer.

Useful to know

  • Choose two ticketed interiors and leave enough time for the free outdoor circuit.
