Landscapes and Regions of Israel
Israel shifts quickly from Mediterranean coast and northern highlands to the Jordan Rift, Dead Sea and deeply eroded Negev desert.
Why go
Geography should shape the itinerary. The green Galilee and Golan support springs and wooded valleys, while the Dead Sea escarpment combines heat, salt and flash-flood risk. Farther south, Makhtesh Ramon and Timna expose different rock histories. Short map distances can still mean major changes in elevation, climate and driving time, especially across the rift margins.
What to look for
The Jordan Rift creates sharp elevation changes from highlands to the Dead Sea.
Makhtesh Ramon is an erosion cirque rather than a volcanic crater.
The Red Sea reef adds a tropical marine ecosystem at the country's southern tip.
