From the Italy World / Travel essentials
Getting around Italy
Use fast trains for the main city corridor and regional trains or local transport for shorter links; compare the full journey, including stations and connections.
Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milan, Venice and Naples form a useful rail backbone for a multi-city trip. Regional trains reach smaller places but stop more often. Before buying a pass or choosing a faster service, compare the actual route and ticket conditions, especially when a transfer or a local connection completes the journey.
Useful to know
Compare point-to-point fares with any rail pass for the cities and travel dates you actually plan.
Check the train category, required reservation and ticket validation rules before boarding.
For local buses and urban transport, confirm where tickets are sold and how that city validates them.
