From the Italy World / Travel essentials
Getting between Italy’s regions
The main north–south rail spine connects Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. Other journeys depend more on regional lines, roads or the crossing between Sicily and the mainland.
Start with the geography of the trip. The major-city corridor supports a different plan from a route through smaller towns, and Sicily requires a mainland crossing. This overview helps decide when a rail-first itinerary is natural and when another connection needs separate planning.
Useful to know
For a major-city trip, compare rail connections along the Turin–Milan–Bologna–Florence–Rome–Naples corridor.
For Sicily, plan the mainland crossing around Messina and Reggio Calabria as a separate leg.
Check current operators, routes and timetables before fixing the order of smaller-town visits.
