Italy Travel Guide
Italy spans Alpine mountains, the Po Valley, a long peninsula and Mediterranean islands. Start with the region and season you want: a northern lake, a historic city and a southern coast make very different trips.
The country rewards a regional approach. Rome links ancient and later capitals; Florence and Venice reveal the power of merchant cities; the Alps, Apennines, Sicily and Sardinia explain why journeys between places can feel like journeys between landscapes. A regional base also gives you time to notice how terrain and history meet rather than collecting distant landmarks.
What to look for
The Alps frame the north, while the Apennines run down the peninsula.
Sicily and Sardinia give the island south a different scale from the mainland.
Rome, Florence and Venice carry different layers of Italy’s history.
Useful to know
Build each travel day around one region before connecting distant cities.
Compare coastal and inland conditions when choosing dates, especially in winter.
