Why go
This compact walking day is for first-time Venice visitors who want to understand the republic as well as enjoy its streets. St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace stand beside each other but tell different stories: one through mosaic and worship, the other through government chambers and prisons. Spend most of the day with those interiors, then follow the central lanes to Rialto Bridge. The brief final stop opens the route onto the Grand Canal, where passing boats and the bridge’s public life give a lively counterpart to the ceremonial spaces around St Mark’s Square.
