Basilica of San Vitale
Inside Ravenna’s octagonal Basilica of San Vitale, sixth-century mosaics and layered interior spaces make a concentrated visit to early Byzantine art and architecture.
The octagonal plan draws you through changing views of the church before the apse mosaics become the focus. Their colour, figures and architectural setting reward close looking from several positions. San Vitale gives Ravenna’s mosaic heritage a particularly vivid setting, joining an unusual building form with works made for that very interior.
