Forte dei Marmi
Forte dei Marmi combines a sandy Versilia beach with a compact town centre. The Fortino and seaward pier reveal the marble trade behind this resort's name.
The town's name means 'fort of the marbles', and its two landmarks make that history visible. Marble from the Apuan Alps was stored by the central fort before shipment from the pier. A walk from the Fortino to the water connects that older working coast with the sandy beach visitors see today.
What to look for
The Fortino stands in the town centre.
A pier extends from the shore.
A broad sandy beach lines this stretch of Versilia.
Useful to know
Start at the Fortino, then walk towards the pier to follow the town's marble story to the sea.
Keep beach time separate from the short town-centre walk if you want to explore both.
