Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore stretches across Piedmont, Lombardy and Switzerland, so a visit works best around one stretch of shore. The Borromean Islands and garden villas make the Stresa–Verbania area a clear focus.
The lake brings Alpine scenery together with lakeside gardens and historic villas. Between Stresa and Verbania, Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori offer three distinct island stops within the Borromean group. Pick a shore and an island combination to understand this wide landscape without treating the entire lake as one stop.
What to look for
The Borromean Islands lie between Stresa and Verbania.
Lakeside villages sit below the southern Alps.
Historic villas and gardens line parts of the shore.
Useful to know
Base an island visit around Stresa or Verbania rather than trying to cover the whole lake at once.
Check boat connections and each villa or garden's current access before choosing multiple stops.
