Viareggio
Viareggio is a Tuscan seaside town where a broad promenade, Art Nouveau buildings and a strong Carnival tradition sit side by side. Its appeal lies as much in the townscape as in the beach.
Walk Passeggiata Margherita to see how seaside architecture frames the waterfront, then look beyond the beach to Viareggio's Carnival culture. The Carnival Citadel and Museum give the elaborate papier-mâché float tradition a home beyond the parade itself. It is a good stop for travelers interested in the design and rituals of a resort town.
What to look for
Art Nouveau façades line Passeggiata Margherita.
The Carnival Citadel and Museum explore the town's float-making tradition.
A long beachfront promenade faces the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Useful to know
Walk the promenade to compare its buildings before heading to the beach.
Check the Carnival Museum's current timetable if its exhibits are central to your visit.
